English 10
Why am I doing this? Activities and their Purpose
Purpose of the Journal – The purpose of the journal is to help students work on critical thinking skills through analyzing the quote and coming up with the appropriate information to address the writing topic and support a clear point. The journal activity also helps students keep a clear focus and understanding of writing strategies, basic grammar rules, and mistakes that lead to a zero.
This activity and the application of these skills will help you think about, figure out, and understand difficult and obscure problems and situations in life, write and communicate clear and appropriate supported responses, as well as help them respond to the CAHSEE essay prompt in a timely manner.
Purpose of Reading - The purpose of reading is to take in and analyze information in the written form that you can understand and use in your life at another point and time. Whether you like reading or not it is an important skill that will you will have to utilize no matter what hobby, activity, or job you take on. It is a skill that will either make your life easier or more difficult depending on how you decide to improve it.
Purpose of Silent Reading – The purpose of reading silently is to allow students to strengthen their mental focus, reading skills and reading comprehension skills. The best way for students to improve their reading skills is to practice reading.
Purpose of Reading as a Class – The purpose of reading as a class is to allow students to critically analyze the text by stopping periodically and breaking down the meaning of the text and the author’s purpose. This allows students to better grasp the themes and purposes of a text, as well as take part in class discussions that work on critical thinking and reading comprehension skills. Another purpose is to allow poor readers a chance to follow along with the text and hear the way to pronounce and read certain words that they might have a difficult time within their own reading.
Purpose of Reading Comprehension and Reflective Questions – The purpose of reading comprehension and reflective questions is to help students remember and understand what they are reading. Answering reading comprehension and reflective questions allows students to strengthen their reading skills and allows them to understand materials that they read.
Purpose of Weekly Vocabulary – The purpose of studying and learning new vocabulary words each week is to help students broaden vernacular and the way they express themselves as well as help them understand common terms found in the academic and professional world. Another purpose is to help students understand how to use language so that they can write and communicate clearly in the real world. Understanding and learning vocabulary allows students to understand new concepts, express new ideas, and communicate with other people in a clear and appropriate manner. Each vocabulary assignment is meant to help test students’ abilities to remember and understand the meaning and the correct usage of each of the weekly vocabulary words.

Required Materials
All students are required to come to class ready to work! Every student should enter class with a BLUE or BLACK pen and paper to write on. Students will need to carry a # 2 pencil with them in order to take scantron tests. Students should have some sort of binder or folder that they use to keep class work, notes, and all returned work. All THS students are required to have a student planner, which they should use to write down class assignments and due dates. All students are encouraged to buy a WRITER’S INC handbook from the Student Store on campus and a dictionary in order to help them with any writing complications that they have at home.
Grading Policy
There are two 16 week semester s that make up the school year. Each semester is divided up into two separate 8 week grading periods. Each semester grade will be accumulated throughout the semester. This means that students will not start over at the beginning of each quarter. For example, if a student has a 78%, or a C+, for the 1st quarter then they will start the 2nd quarter with the same percentage. Students’ grades will start fresh at the beginning of the 2nd semester. Each quarter’s point total and work load will be relatively similar. However, due to different types of literature and lesson plans, points and work load will vary from quarter to quarter and semester to semester. Therefore, it is extremely important that students approach each quarter as an important part of their overall grade. Grade percentages: 90%-100% = A, 80%-89% = B, 70%-79% = C, 60%-69% = D, and anything below a 60% is an F.
Assignments
A majority of each semester’s point total and work load in English 10 will come from daily writing assignments (journals), weekly vocabulary quizzes, group assignments, homework (reading comprehension questions), class participation (contributing to class discussions), class presentations, end of the quarter vocabulary tests, unit tests, and essays. Any typed assignment can be emailed to me if a student is unable to print it out or if a student is going to be absent on the due date. My email address is [email protected]. Plagiarism or copying work from the internet, another student, or another source is considered cheating and will result in a ZERO for the assignment and will be subject to punishment according to the student handbook.
Late Work
All work is due on the assigned due date. If an assignment is not turned in on the due date a student has one week from the original due date to turn in the assignment. No work will be accepted a full week after the due date. If a student is absent on the due date they are expected to turn in the assignment on the next day that they are at school (not just in class). If a student is absent on the day that an assignment is given they will be given an extra day to turn in the assignment, unless the entirety of the assignment was given prior to the student being absent. For example, journal topics will be given to students in advance and all students will be expected to have all of the journal assignments completed on the due date or they will be considered late. Any work that is more than a week late will not be accepted. If a group member is absent during group work the absent member will be required to make up the work on their own. Any student that misses class for any reason is required to make up the work that they miss, NO EXCUSSES!
Being on Time
All students are expected to come to class on time, this means all students should be sitting in their assigned seats when the tardy bell rings. If a student is standing directly outside of the classroom, walking aimlessly around the classroom, or sitting in a seat different from their assigned seat when the tardy bell rings then they will be considered tardy. Any student that is tardy will be sent to the office to get a tardy slip, unless they have a written note from another staff member.
Restroom Privileges
Each student is given 1 restroom pass per semester. Once a student accumulates 5 teacher signatures on their pass or loses their bathroom pass, they will not be allowed to leave the class unless summoned by the office. If a student brings a note establishing that they have a medical condition that causes them to use the restroom often, then they will be allowed to use the restroom whenever they need to. Students with medical conditions should inform the teacher at the beginning of the school year.
